Witteberg Mountains

Fine-liner

2025

I created this drawing as a part of my Witteberg Mountain series, this one was a stand out as I wanted to showcase the Grooveleaf Sugarbush flower and the beauty of the land. I went bigger in size outside of the series to play with layout and focal points.

This series was intentionally created with a warm brown tone to create a sort of map; studies of a rugged place, like weathered documents.

Fynbos Watercolor

I created this watercolor study of fynbos I'd seen and recreated them from memory. This was an exercise in letting go and going with the flow.  wanted to add a linear flair to it and keep with my style but also add washes and looseness to see what marks would come instinctively.

Wildfire Ink Study

A study of burnt protea bushes and their bare shapes and contrasting tones against the sky. I used a stick I had carved into a fountain pen tip shape and soaked in ink to paint with. I find the stick really loosens up my mark making and my line work. It invokes a scratchyness which adds to my recurring narratives within fynbos and natural scenes and places. I feel like a humble stick has opened up my artistic practise and I cant wait to explore this technique more.

This piece is an ode to my passion for nature and the outdoors while also being held back by internalised fears and practical difficulties going truly off grid when stepping into natural spaces, the slight sense of wild hostility and ominous presence of places.

This piece was created around a notion of a spot one has just laid down in to take rest in a shady nook among scratchy fynbos in the shelter of a mountain. Looking up where I am yet to go and the sights yet to see.

Rocklands

I created this landscape with intent to sketch the likeness and abstraction of the shadows and rock texture of the Cederberg Wilderness Area.

I used a deep, cool tone brown to mimic the shadows. This image was captured after a walk I went on through a well known rock climbing section in Rocklands called the Plateau and captured this iconic mountain scene. This piece is a statement to the end of a small series of drawings, some in an en-plein-air style of sketching finished on site or in the area.

Fynbos Mountain

Fineliner & Watercolor

I created this drawing with a certain feeling in mind; like you've just laid down to rest beneath the fynbos and bush during a mountain walk and while youre resting you look up to where you have yet to still walk and explore.

Cederberg Stillness

After a mountain getaway, I used some film photos I took to capture the true beauty of the Cederberg during the peak summer months.

I looked into the great texture of the hillsides and the bush, I wanted to create a feeling of in a valley and within a secluded spot. I also wanted to create a sense of a barren place like the Summer months make a place feel without any lush bush.

I wanted to recreate a rocky outcrop I discovered on a walk with my dad in the Silvermine area. As a way to explore capturing a fond memory and tie it to a place.
